Zinger #55: A major earthquake along the San Andreas fault is…
Q: A major earthquake along the San Andreas fault is capable of causing a significant portion of the California coast to break off and sink into the ocean.
A: Fiction. The Pacific Ocean is two miles deep along the coast, and California is twenty miles thick, so there is no risk of the California coast sinking into the ocean. However, a severe earthquake could cause a vertical shift and put part of the coast under water.
